Step 1 - Grind the Oats First
This is the technique that makes this smoothie work better than most banana smoothies and it's the step most people skip by adding oats directly with everything else.
Add the ¼ cup of oats to the bottom of the blender. Pulse 5-8 times until the oats are finely ground and look almost like a rough flour. This pre-grinding step ensures the oats integrate completely into the smoothie rather than leaving visible oat pieces or a gritty texture.
Why the bottom of the blender? Dry ingredients grind more efficiently in a dry blender without liquid interfering with the blade action. Adding liquid first and then trying to grind the oats produces less consistent results.
Step 2 - Add All Remaining Ingredients
Add the frozen banana chunks, unsweetened almond milk, peanut butter, maple syrup, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and kosher salt on top of the ground oats.
Order doesn't matter significantly at this stage the liquid and softer ingredients will blend together regardless of the order they go in.
Step 3 - Blend Until Smooth
Blend on high speed until completely smooth and creamy approximately 45-60 seconds in a high-speed blender, potentially 90 seconds to 2 minutes in a standard blender.
Stop and scrape as needed- The frozen banana chunks can occasionally gather around the blades without fully incorporating. Stop the blender, scrape down the sides with a spatula, and continue blending. Repeat as necessary until no visible chunks remain.
The consistency check- The finished smoothie should flow slowly when tilted thicker than a juice but pourable. If it's too thick to pour easily, add a splash more almond milk and blend again briefly.
Step 4 - Taste and Adjust
Taste before drinking and adjust as needed:
Needs more sweetness- Add additional maple syrup in ½ tablespoon increments
Needs more thickness- Add 3-4 ice cubes and blend again
Needs more cinnamon flavor- Add another ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon
Too thick- Add another splash of almond milk
Drink immediately this smoothie is at its best temperature and texture right after blending. It can sit in the refrigerator for a few hours but the texture thickens significantly as the oats continue absorbing liquid.
