Ingredients

  • For the Smoothie Base
  • 1½ cups frozen berry mix - or any frozen fruit mix you prefer; a blend of strawberries blueberries, and raspberries gives the deepest color and the most complex berry flavor
  • 2 bananas - 1 frozen for thickness and creaminess in the base + 1 fresh (sliced for topping); freeze ripe, spotty bananas for maximum natural sweetness
  • 2 tablespoons almond butter - natural runny creamy almond butter blends most smoothly; substitute any nut or seed butter depending on preference and allergy needs
  • ½ –¾ cup unsweetened non-dairy milk or water - start with ½ cup and add more only if the blender genuinely stalls; less liquid = thicker bowl
  • Optional Protein Upgrade
  • 1 scoop vegan protein powder - swap for the almond butter OR add it alongside; if using protein powder you may need a touch more liquid to compensate for the powder's thickness
  • Topping Options Endless Combinations
  • The toppings list for this bowl is genuinely one of the most comprehensive in the series choose what works for you:
  • Crunch and Texture
  • Granola
  • Cacao nibs
  • Almonds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Fruit
  • Sliced banana from the second fresh banana
  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Grapes
  • Kiwi slices
  • Pomegranate seeds
  • Goji berries
  • Protein and Nutrition Boosters
  • Hemp hearts - one of the best invisible protein additions; 3 tbsp adds 10g of plant protein
  • Chia seeds - fiber and omega-3s
  • Natural nut butter drizzle almond, peanut, sunflower
  • Tropical and Flavored
  • Coconut flakes
  • Cacao nibs
  • FYI adding hemp hearts chia seeds, and an extra drizzle of almond butter as toppings can push the protein count of this bowl past 12 grams per serving without any significant change to the flavor. It's the easiest protein upgrade in plant-based eating and most people don't use it nearly enough.

Equipment

  • Clean, simple, minimal:
  • High-speed blender - the most critical tool; a Vitamix, Blendtec, or NutriBullet Pro handles frozen fruit and almond butter effortlessly; a lower-powered blender will require more liquid and produce a thinner result
  • Tamper tool - use it if your blender has one; push frozen ingredients toward the blades rather than adding more liquid
  • Measuring cups and spoons - particularly for the non-dairy milk; the quantity matters significantly for achieving the right consistency
  • Spatula - for scraping every last bit of almond-butter-enriched base from the jug
  • 1–2 wide, shallow bowls - surface area over depth; a wide bowl gives you a proper canvas for topping arrangement
  • Small prep bowls (optional) - for pre-measuring toppings before the base is ready so assembly is immediate
  • No stove, no oven, no pans. A blender and ten minutes is the entire requirement.

Method

  1. Step 1- Add Ingredients to the Blender in the Right Order
  2. Place ingredients into your blender in this sequence for the most efficient blend:
  3. Non-dairy milk (liquid first helps the blades engage immediately)
  4. Almond butter (add before the frozen fruit so it doesn't clump at the bottom)
  5. Frozen banana (break into chunks if whole-frozen)
  6. Frozen berry mix (add last on top of everything)
  7. This order matters more than most people realize. Liquid at the bottom, heaviest frozen ingredients on top the blender processes from the bottom upward and this arrangement allows the motor to pull ingredients into the blades efficiently without stalling.
  8. Step 2- Blend to a Thick Creamy Consistency
  9. Start on low and increase to high speed. Use your tamper tool to push frozen fruit toward the blades if the mixture stalls. Stop every 20–30 seconds to scrape the sides frozen berries and banana chunks cling to the blender walls and won't incorporate without a quick spatula scrape between blending bursts.
  10. Your target consistency. thick enough that it moves reluctantly when you tilt the jug. It should look like very thick, dense soft-serve ice cream. If it pours freely and easily, it's too thin for a bowl add a small handful of frozen berries and blend again to correct.
  11. If the blender stalls completely, add one tablespoon of liquid at a time just enough to get the blades moving. Every tablespoon loosens the mixture. Add cautiously.
  12. Step 3- Pour and Arrange Toppings Immediately
  13. Scrape every bit of the base into your wide serving bowl using a spatula. Smooth the surface with the back of a spoon. Add your toppings immediately while the base is still cold and firm the base starts warming and softening as soon as it hits the room-temperature bowl, so move with purpose.
  14. Arrange toppings in a way that makes visual sense cluster similar items together, alternate colors, create distinct sections. The contrast of deep purple/red base against yellow banana slices, green kiwi, red strawberries, and the golden-brown granola and almond butter drizzle is genuinely beautiful and takes under 90 seconds to arrange intentionally.
  15. Eat immediately. A smoothie bowl that sits for 10 minutes before eating has already lost its best texture window
