Step 1 - Add Everything to the Blender
Add the almond milk first (liquid at the bottom helps the blades engage properly), then the peanut butter, banana (broken into a few pieces to help blending), and dark chocolate chips if using. Add the ice last on top of the other ingredients.
Why liquid first? Blenders work more efficiently when liquid contacts the blade immediately rather than having the blade hit solid ingredients first. This prevents the common "smoothie stuck at the top" problem that most blender users experience occasionally.
Step 2 - Blend to Your Preferred Consistency
Blend on high speed until smooth approximately 45-60 seconds for a standard blender, 30-45 seconds for a high-speed blender.
The consistency check- The smoothie should pour smoothly from the blender in a thick, continuous stream not thin and watery, not so thick it requires a spoon. If it pours too thin, add 2-3 additional ice cubes and blend again.
For a thinner smoothie- Add additional almond milk 2 tablespoons at a time and blend briefly. The recipe specifically notes this adjustment.
For a thicker smoothie- Add more ice or reduce the almond milk slightly on the next batch.
Step 3 - Pour and Serve Immediately
Divide evenly between two glasses and serve immediately while cold. This smoothie doesn't hold well at room temperature the ice melts and the texture becomes progressively thinner over about 15 minutes.
